Drawing and painting in the European atelier tradition — Tuesday evenings at the studio in Paris; Wednesday evenings live online; and, at a time that suits you, one to one.
The sessions
The same teaching, three formats. A long in-person session on Tuesday, a live group on Wednesday wherever you are, and one-to-one work when something specific needs unblocking. All of them: a small group and individual critique.

Every study strengthens the same underlying skills: seeing, measuring, deciding.
See the subject as it actually is in front of you, not as you know it to be: main directions, large shapes, negative space.
Place the large shapes through block-in and comparative measurement; check the whole before any detail.
Organise the shadow family and the light family. Build a readable value structure instead of chasing individual tones.
Turn a flat shape into volume: planes, direction of light, and the transitions between tones.
Build control of the material through limited and monochrome studies; carry the structure from the drawing onto the canvas.
Use colour without separating it from value; bring the picture to unity through temperature, saturation and edge decisions.
Why method matters
An old tradition, an accessible training
Handan Uslu-Desachy took the classical atelier approach she gathered from Dublin to Porto and turned it into a systematic course taught in French and English. So you know where to begin, which skill to work on when, and what your next step is.
Your teacher
An artist and teacher based in Paris, Handan Uslu-Desachy works in realist figure and portrait drawing, and teaches classical realism not as a style but as a method: seeing, measuring, analysing, and building form step by step.
She first met classical realism in 2019 at The Drawing School in Dublin, then trained in 2024–2025 at AARP — Atelier de Arte Realista do Porto under Daniel Gamelas and André Soares.
