PAINTER・TEACHER

Handan Uslu-Desachy

Drawing and painting in the European atelier tradition — Tuesday evenings at the studio in Paris; Wednesday evenings live online; and, at a time that suits you, one to one.

The sessions

Three ways to work together

The same teaching, three formats. A long in-person session on Tuesday, a live group on Wednesday wherever you are, and one-to-one work when something specific needs unblocking. All of them: a small group and individual critique.

Step by step

Learn to paint, not to finish one picture

Every study strengthens the same underlying skills: seeing, measuring, deciding.

  1. 01Observation

    Learn to see

See the subject as it actually is in front of you, not as you know it to be: main directions, large shapes, negative space.

  2. 02Measurement

    Set the proportion

Place the large shapes through block-in and comparative measurement; check the whole before any detail.

  3. 03Value

    Separate light from shadow

Organise the shadow family and the light family. Build a readable value structure instead of chasing individual tones.

  4. 04Form

    Model the volume

Turn a flat shape into volume: planes, direction of light, and the transitions between tones.

  5. 05Paint

    Move into paint

Build control of the material through limited and monochrome studies; carry the structure from the drawing onto the canvas.

  6. 06Colour

    Handle colour and edges

Use colour without separating it from value; bring the picture to unity through temperature, saturation and edge decisions.

Why method matters

The same effort, inside a system that holds

Learning without a system

  • Getting lost between unconnected videos
  • Moving to advanced technique before the basics are closed
  • Copying a painting without being able to carry that knowledge to a new subject
  • Repeating the same mistake without seeing its cause
  • Leaving progress to talent or inspiration

The European atelier method

  • A clear path from the fundamentals to advanced work
  • One underlying skill in focus at each stage
  • Principles of seeing and measuring that transfer to any subject
  • Developing the decision, not only the result
  • Moving forward knowing what you are working on, and why

An old tradition, an accessible training

From the European ateliers to your own table

Handan Uslu-Desachy took the classical atelier approach she gathered from Dublin to Porto and turned it into a systematic course taught in French and English. So you know where to begin, which skill to work on when, and what your next step is.
